Case Study 1: Monitoring Power via Low-Power Radio
The problem:
A university required the ability to monitor energy consumption, load profiles and harmonics at various buildings
on a campus site. There were no useable networks linking the buildings and no commercially viable possibility of
installing a hard-wired network.
The solution:
We recommended installation of a monitoring system using low-power radio and Power Studio SCADA monitoring software.
The results:
Multi-function meters on various LV switchboards can be interrogated remotely
from the Estates'
Office via a graphical interface. The system provides instantaneous data and historical information including load
profiles, energy consumption
and numerous other electrical parameters. Excess out-of-hours consumption and unbalanced loads can easily be
highlighted, thus reducing costs. Alarms are set to trigger on high Total Harmonic Distortion and other undesirable
conditions. 3rd harmonics generated by high frequency lighting, PCs and other non-linear,
single phase loads are also monitored to ensure levels are acceptable.
Case Study 2: Text Messaging of Alarms
The problem:
A telecoms company needed to monitor business critical alarms at a number
of sites around the UK. Alarms included availability of supply to critical systems,
UPS status alarms, room humidity and temperature.
The solution:
We recommended installation of a monitoring system using an SMS Text based monitoring
system capable of sending customised text messages to user specified mobile numbers based
upon the status of various digital inputs.
The results:
The engineering staff are now able to receive instant indication of business critical
alarms whilst anywhere in the world. The on-call engineers can be on-site within hours, or even minutes, to deal with
critical situations.
